Transformations
Transformation is changing the form of a sentence without changing its meaning.A brief direction about doing transformation is given below.
Sentences in the form Interrogative, Affirmative and Negative
Interogative | Affirmative | Negative |
Does he sing a song? | He sings a song. | He does not sing a song. |
Does he play football? | He plays football. | He does not play football. |
Can he drive a bus? | He can drive a bus. | He cannot drive a bus. |
Did Anu write some poems? | Anu wrote some poems. | Anu did not write any poems. |
Note:
- If there is an auxiliary verb in a sentence, do not change the form of a main verb while transforming a sentence.
- If there is not an auxiliary verb in a sentence, always change the forms of verb when we add or remove did/does to transform sentence.
Structure for sentences with auxiliary verb:
Sub+ aux+ verb+.................(affirmative) - He should inform to the police
Sub+ aux+ not+ verb+........(negative) - He should not inform to the police
Sub+ sub+ verb+..................?(interrogative) - Should he inform to the police?
Structure for sentences without auxiliary verb:
Sub+ main verb+.................. ..... (affirmative)
Sub+ do/did/does+ not+verb(1)..........(negative)
Do/does/Did+sub+verb(1)............?(interrogative)
- Use do not or do if there is a V1.
- Use does not or does if there is a V5.
- Use did not or did if there is a V2.
General rules:
- We usually change affirmative imperatives into negative as follows:
- Verb+...........
- Do not+verb+.......
- Let+ object+ verb+.....
- Let+ object+not+ verb+.....
- These words change while transforming sentences.
- Some- any
- and so- and neither
- already- yet
- too- either
- a lot of- much/many
- Only changing the following words, we can change the sentences into negative.
- always - never
- either...or... - neither...nor..
- some - no
- some of/any of- none of
