The rapid population growth and environmental degradation have been the challenging problems for the country. One of the main aspects of population management is to control population growth. Nepal government is committed to making plans for attaining the goals of population management.

The population of our country is increasing day by day. The population growth influences the different development programs. So, the management of population growth is an essential part of the civilization, as it directly affects the amount of soil, water, and air pollution, and the linked species reduction and climate change. Population management has become a compulsory part of the national plan for the country like Nepal. Population management is the practice of keeping the human population at a sustainable human population number. Population management includes the provision of public awareness in matters of population growth and its control, population education, provision of family planning services and so on. Similarly, for moderating population growth, the present primary focus of the policy will be on developing family planning, mother and child health educational activities, raising the status of women etc. For achieving the goal of population management, Nepal Government is playing an important role. Likewise, several national and international organizations are actively involved in the management of the population. Some of the national organizations that play a supportive role in population management are as follows:

Population Education Program

The population education program is one of the measures to control the rising population. It teaches the

people to establish the coordination between the population and available means and resources.

The population education program is very useful to control the increasing population. It develops the concept of small and happy family. It teaches the people to establish coordination between the population and available means and resources. There are two types of population education programs. They are:

  • Formal Population Education
  • Informal Population Education
  1. Formal Population Education:
    Formal population education aims to teach school children about the basic population issues and to encourage them eventually to have smaller families. It is vital to include population in the school curriculum because population and family life issues are an important aspect of many personal, community, and national decisions. Teachers play a crucial role in the success of a population education program. Different organizations like UNFPA (United Nations Fund for Population Activities) and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) play an important role in population education program. The main aim of this program is to develop awareness of population-related issues such as rapid population growth and family planning through an educational process.
    Some of the agencies which are involved in this program are as follows:
    • Family Planning and Maternal Child Health Project under the Ministry of Health and Population.
    • Population Education Unit under the District Education Office.
    • Central Department of Population Studies under TU.
    • Population Education Project Coordinator's Office under the Ministry of Education and Sports.
    • Curriculum Development Centre under the Tribhuwan University (T.U).
    • Curriculum Development Centre under Ministry of Education and Sports.
    • Curriculum Development Centre under Higher Secondary Education Board.
    • Faculty of Education.

  2. Informal Population Education:
    Formal and academic education programs have not been effective for those population who are out of its reach. This program has adopted the theme of "Small family, Happy family". Informal education is very important for raising awareness regarding population among adults, adolescents, adults and women. Different departments and agencies are actively involved in the population education program such as Family Planning Association of Nepal, Local Development Training Academy, Red Cross Society, Nepal Scout etc. Different means of media such as TV, radios, films, pamphlets, and newspapers are used to spread the Informal Population Education.

Ministry of Health and Population

Ministry of Health and Population is the parent governmental body for improving the health and population of the people including the physical, mental and social well-being of Nepalese people for overall national development. It also plays a leading role in improving the health of the people including mental, physical and social well-being and overall national development.The Ministry is also responsible for making necessary arrangements and formulating policies for the effective delivery of curative services, disease prevention, health promotive activities and the establishment of a primary health care system.
